A great number of the early settlers, many of them Revolutionary War veterans, came from Litchfield County, Connecticut, and Berkshire County, Massachusetts and would settle in Oriskany. They found land that was excellent for farming and the Oriskany Creek and Waterfall (namesake of the town) was a source of power for gristmills and sawmills. The abundant supply of limestone was utilized for many buildings and later, in crushed form, for roads. Revolutionary War Hero General Herkimer would also be wounded at the battle of Oriskany and would later die from complications of having to have his leg amputated. #rochester #rochesterny #oriskany #daytrip #roadtrip #saturday #love #hope #landmark #history #historic #latergram #wandering #wanderlust #explore #exploring #adventure #adventuring #exploringtheglobe #historical #ny #upstate #newyork #nature #ignature #goodcompany #waterfall #waterfalls by tpw86
